A Greener Vision for New Jersey

Statement

Date: Sept. 26, 2018

I spent my entire life growing up on the Jersey shore: swimming, surfing, exploring our beautiful district… And my love of our outdoor spaces has only matured since growing up. I've spent my life on the water, be it lifeguarding in Manasquan, on Naval ships throughout the world, or surfing right down the street from my home in Rumson. Protecting our environment should be an important issue to every citizen of Central New Jersey.

But our environment isn't only an issue that concerns us on a physical level, it can also be viewed as an economic issue. As climate change continues to intensify, threats to our health, our national security, our economy and our future, we must be working together to find solutions based in scientific fact and evidence. Hurricane Sandy devastated our region, and our community continues still today to recover from its effects. But no real change has been made to prevent the destruction of such a storm from impacting our homes again. We must work with federal authorities to both continue to rebuild our communities, but also to prepare ourselves, our homes, and our futures for a more resilient coastline.

We must also begin to work towards embracing the green energy economy as a nation. Clean energy like wind, solar and hydropower both protect our environment and provide the energy we need to keep our lives running smoothly, on a day-to-day basis. Investing in these forms of clean energy will also bring well-paying jobs to our district that will employ thousands across Central New Jersey.

After coming to office in 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt embarked on an ambitious project to protect the natural beauty of our country. Unfortunately for us, today's Republicans hold a callous disregard for our planet at a time when it is in danger like never before. We need leaders who believe in facts and understand that climate change poses a security, economic, and humanitarian threat. The future of this country's energy policy is in wind, solar, and hydro power, and we need to invest in these technologies so that our economy is stronger, we are safer, and our country is a global leader on environmental issues once again.
